What's the best and worst thing about being an author?
The best thing is undoubtedly the adulation and hero worship of my adoring public. However, it does mean that the occasional worshipper tramples all over my cabbage patch, ruining cabbages I had planned to hurl at my neighbour, Dieter. This is the worse thing, if it wasn't clear.

Viking Fire by Andrea R. Cooper

In 856 CE, Ireland is a land of myth, magic, and blood. Viking raiders have fought the Irish for over half a century. Rival Irish clans promise only betrayal and carnage.

Kaireen, daughter of Laird Liannon, is suddenly forced into an arranged marriage with her sworn enemy, a Viking. She refuses to submit. With no mention of love, only land and the protection of her clan, she endeavors to get her betrothed banished from her country. Will love find its way around her stubborn heart?

Bram, the Viking, finds himself without future or inheritance as a younger son in his family. A marriage to the Laird’s daughter would grant him land if he swears fidelity and if his men will fight along with the Liannons against any foe—Irish or Viking. However, the Laird’s feisty daughter only holds animosity for him and his kind. Is marriage worth the battle scars of such a relentless opponent?

With the blame for a rival laird’s death treacherously set against the Liannons, Kaireen and Bram must find a way to lay aside their differences as an unforeseen darkness sends death snapping at their heels.

What is it you love most about writing?
I love meeting new characters. I am a pantser, so I discover things while writing at the same time as a character does. I do know the ending-ish, but I allow my characters to develop along with the story. It’s a thrill when a character does something I wasn’t expecting.

What are you working on now and what projects and ideas do you have lined up next?
I just wrapped up The Orion Chronicles: The Journal of Forgotten Secrets, which is the first installment in The Orion Chronicles series. It’s about a teenager that finds himself inadvertently lured into a sadistic plan, a game of life and death if you will, that was specifically designed for him by a mastermind thought to have vanished almost a hundred years ago. The more Orion dives into this evil scheme, the more he uncovers about his family and how everyone he’s ever known has been keeping dark secrets from him. Ultimately he decides he’s had enough and he decides he’s going to take matters into his own hands and start controlling his own fate. At least he thinks he is anyways. That story is out now, ready for people to snatch up. While working on promoting that, I’m also diligently working on trying to finish the second episode in the series called Curse of the Phantom Brotherhood. It takes Orion’s journey into the dark underworld of a magical sect supposedly eradicated some time ago. The more he discovers who he is, the more his life is thrown into peril. It’s really a great little adventure that I don’t think is a whole lot like anything else out there.

Is there anything about you or your writing that makes you unique from other authors?
You know, high school is a nutty time. You're discovering parts of yourself that only adolescence brings to light. It's a really supple place to set a story because emotions are super high and experiences are life-shaping. But I personally found the years after high school to be the most difficult and formative-- almost more interesting and frustrating than my teen years. So as I was growing into adulthood, I wanted to read my story. But most of the fantasy fiction was about teenagers, and most of the gay fiction was about coming out. Where was I? There's a severe lack of representation of what we could call the "new adult" in fiction, especially in fantasy fiction. And don't even get me started on the absence of gay protagonists. Ugh. I'm tired of seeing twenty-something gay men forced to read books about teenage girls because there's no books about them. Don't get me wrong, I love those books, but my community deserves to see themselves in popular fiction. So I'm helping them.

What's the best and worst thing about being an author?
The absolute best thing is having control of where the story goes. It’s how I balance my disappointment when I don’t care for the creative direction other books or films take.  The worst thing is the time that writing and editing devours. It’s not a very efficient activity.

Where did the inspiration for the City of the Gods novels come from?
The seed for the books was first developed in a limited series independent comic series I wrote called Pantheon. These were published in the mid-1990s. My co-writer and I also toyed with presenting this world as a MMORPG, but the development costs were too high. Still wanting to bring the world and characters to life, we finally produced the first novel, a game supplement, several comic book tie-ins (including a reboot of Pantheon) and a short story anthology.

Chaos Chronicles Book 1: Zephyr the West Wind by R.J. Tolson

17 years ago, in the island village of Dentro, lived a large and powerful demon. With just a howl, mountains were obliterated. With the help of an outsider, the chief of Dentro destroyed the demon and sealed its dark power into three powerful ancient weapons: a spear, shield, and a sword. After leaving the unwelcoming village, the man who helped destroy the demon took the sword in an effort to keep it away from the village. Months later, a villager bore the son of the outsider, breaking one of the sacred village laws in doing so.

Born into a village filled with people who hated him, Zephyr grew up without knowing why they did. With no friends, and eventually no family with the passing of his mother, Zephyr was forced to survive by himself as an outcast. Is there anything about you or your writing that makes you unique from other authors?
I get a lot of positive and amazed comments about my imagination, usually, “Where do you get these ideas?” or “You are talented storyteller,” or “How do you drive with all these wild ideas in your head?” I honestly have no idea—it’s just me and how I think. I see odd stuff in nature, like portals and strange creatures.  I’ve been this way as long as I can remember. It does make for some great tales though!

Orion's Harvesters by Vanessa Finaughty
Orion’s Harvesters by Vanessa Finaughty

Two months after Liam MacAskill’s return to Earth from Tridor Monastery, a portal opens in Orion’s Nebula, and a continent-sized spaceship emerges. It heads for Earth, where it hovers over Africa. Shortly thereafter, a second alien species comes through the portal. Then impossibility becomes reality – the second species steals Earth’s sun.

The first species, the T’Acan – or Harvesters, as some call them – seem friendly enough, but Liam suspects they are omitting something about their reasons for visiting Earth, which seem lame to him. It doesn’t take Liam long to discover what… They have to be stopped, but how to stop an invincible enemy?

Air force and military attacks have no effect on the T’Acan spaceship, but Earth has a secret defence not even the military are aware of – a powerful weapon that harnesses ley line energy, kept hidden by warrior monks since humanity’s beginnings. It could save Earth when even nuclear weapons would fail… but will it be enough to drive the T’Acan harvesters away, and will the untested weapon work the way they hope?

As Liam races against time to warn Arthean that Tridor’s Earth may be in the same danger, even he isn’t sure he’ll make it in time.

What is it you love most about writing?
The way it frees me of this stress-filled, unjust world to put me in a more magical world in which justice and righteousness prevail.

When you first get the idea for a new story, do you find that the finished product tends to differ quite significantly from your original idea, or does the original idea remain more or less intact?
I usually start off with one scene that’s vivid in my head and it just flows from there. I tend to have a general overall idea of the story, but my characters lead it, so honestly, if I want to know what happens next in the story, I have to write it first.
